correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. he is joining us now. now, sanjay, you have been taking a very close look, potentially at the mind of a killer. >> yeah, and that question, why, wolf that you ask, it is hard to say for sure whether there is ever going to be a satisfactory answer to that. but there are several things that medical experts and investigators are going to look at, including specific patterns. we looked at ten of the most widely studied cases, tragedies, i should say in history. and take a look at what we found. first thing you notice when you look around newtown, everyone has that questioning look, why? what did we miss, if anything? no answers yet. just hindsight. to try to make some sense of the tragedy here in newtown, be connecticut, medical investigators are also looking at evidence of patterns, not talking about clothes or even life-style, but rather looking for evidence of specific plans could give some clues as to what was happening in the person's mind and in their brain. it is hard to know, because thankfully, there are relatively few tragedies like this one. but a cl

>>> hi, thanks for joining us. i'm maureen ume. >>> the top story tonight, the wind. the wind advisory expired about an hour ago. still, it is still pretty windy. how strong were the winds? let's go to fox 5's gwen tolbart. how strong were they out there, gwen? >> reporter: we had record at reagan national airport, dulles as well as baltimore were in excess of 40 to 45 miles per hour, reaching up to 51, actually, at dulles. there are some areas that maybe we didn't get reporting stations from yet. we'll have some update on that, but those winds are definitely strong. these are official numbers that came in just prior to the 5:00 hour. here is a look at current wind gusts now, still vety strong, from 17 to 32 miles per hour. they're going to start to diminish and that's good news. we'll have light wind as we move into the overnight hours. temperatures, 40 degrees at reagan. 37 at dulles. i want to say that those winds today gave a significant wind chill and only felt like it was in the low 20s in many of our neighborhoods. skies not too bad. we had a few clouds. we are looking

person can ever possibly comprehend them. they walk among us every single day. and does anybody really believe that the next adam lanza isn't planning his attack on a school? since when did a gun automatically become a bad word? a gun in the hands of a secret service agent protecting our president isn't a bad word. a gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the united states of america isn't a d word. and when you hear your glass breaking at 3:00 a.m. and you call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you. so why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect the president of our country or our police but bad when it's used to protect our children in our schools? >> to be clear, this wasn't a press conference. it was a statement. no questions were taken. that doesn't mean there weren't any interruptions. >> stop killing our children. it's the nra and assault weapons that are killing our children. >> protesters accused the nra of having blood on its hands. i'll be speaking to one of those in a moment. way

to just one tanzania. no one is close to the u.s. where does the burning desire to own a gun come from? second amendment. let's refresh our memories. a well regulated militia being necessary to the securitiative free state, the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. throughout our history, it's been a part of our fabric, the minutemen took up arms to over throw the british rule and earn freedom. now memorialized in statues like this one in massachusetts. the west was one in the 1800s with the help of firearms. in the 20th century it was cops and robbers, mobsteres, bootlegers. all of them were armed. right? the history books will not be glorifying any of this. cities where mass murderers have taken lives are now household names, columbine, aurora and now newtown. our second amendment rights may be inked on the most important document this country has, its intention was not -- was to protect, not to hurt or kill innocent people. for all you gun lovers, i get it. i grew up in iowa, shot my first gun with my grandpa when i was 8 years old. i get it. i am saying it's

we begin with ktvu's amber lee. she tells us about the problems it caused. >> reporter: it is raining right now. we are along 101 tonight. a highway patrol officer took us long as she worked in the rain during one of the busiest periods of the year. >> reporter: sounding her siren she fought traffic to respond to an accident. it involved a motorcycle and a car. one of five crashes they responded to around 6:00 p.m. tonight. officers say they were all weather related. >> reporter: minutes later she spotted the driver of his car speeding past her car, going 80 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. the officer sited the driver for speeding. >> she was initially in the slow lane and one turn went straight to the fast lane. >> reporter: this time of year people are rushing around trying to get things down for the holidays so drivers are stressed and distracted. ingredient for an accident. >> incredible this year. much worse than any other year. >> reporter: it appears there are more people on the roads. >> the exits off the freeway are blocked because people are trying to get into th

that impacted us with moisture moving slow to the south. we have a another system just on the heels of this one. to the north, it is bracing towards your weekend. and we are already dealing with delays at visibility with j. r. stone. and also the weekend rainfall. details, coming up. >> pam: and our team starts tonight with kron 4's j-r stone. where the bad weather is hitting. during one of the busiest travel days of the year. j-r, we hear it's a big mess for southwest fliers in particular. >>reporter: you have got that correct there are delays all across the board. however, when it comes to south west it is a complete mess. this is video from the last one hour. you see how long the line is just to get to the ticket counter. many of these people are waiting just to check their bags! i talked to people that with between three and four in a half hours just to check their bags. with a flight delays, and 90 flights have been cancelled all day. at one point, the are riding the ladies were 3.5 hours. the average delay time is 60 minutes-90 minutes. passengers-. >> i waited for poured five hours and b

convenient store. the shooting happened just before 1:00 this afternoon. police tell us a suspect is in custody but the shooting is still under investigation. police are investigation a deadly shooting in the northeast. two men were shot overnight. one of those victims 44-year-old raymond harris died. the other victim was hurt and taken to the hospital. police are still looking for the person or persons responsible. >> over to prince george's police are investigating a deadly accident. a car crash earlier today on the 9200 block of ridge road. five people were inside at the time and one of them died. four suspected robbers are in custody after they held up a bank in arlington. arlington county police say they stole cash from navy federal credit union this morning. police say the robbers likely stole money that was traceable. the suspects crossed into the district and were arrested. >> fire raged through a strip mall in maryland overnight. firefighters say the blaze started in one building and then the flames spread to two other businesses. no one wa
